Loanwords as data in historical linguistics: An areal linguistic study

Abstract:
The specificity of loanwords as linguistic data consists not only in their being made up of systemic elements but also in revealing the changes that have taken place in the recipient language since the time of borrowing. Making use of a specific example, the author attempts to point out that, despite exact and regular correspondences between the data structures of donor and recipient, the reconstructum as a datum can only be plausible and cannot be regarded as evidence.
