Abstract:
The essay presents the principles and motives of Viennese government in regard of language practice of administration and judiciary in Hungary in the 1850s. Then it analyses the causes and consequences of the want of any general regulation in this regard (elasticity and uncertainty). Finally, it depicts the reaction of the German and non-German speaking population to the governmental language policy.
