Abstract:
The German subjunctive features not only relatively clear-cut major meanings but also several fuzzy submeanings. This survey will be looking into the functions and usage possibilities of the German subjunctive. Furthermore, it is about the presentation of this grammatical category in the German-Hungarian Contrastive Grammar which is expected to come out soon. The feasibilities of rendering the German subjunctive into Hungarian are depicted in a chart structured according to its certain functions; it shows that both subjunctives I and II can be reproduced by all three Hungarian moods. Thus, before choosing the right Hungarian mood the exact function of the German subjunctive has to be ascertained.
