Hybrid theories in contemporary cognitive metaphor research
Abstract:
This paper aims to highlight the way Tendahl (2009) tries to unite the conceptual theory of metaphor of Lakoff and Johnson (Lakoff & Johnson 1980, Lakoff 1993) and the relevance theoretical insights of metaphor (Sperber & Wilson 2012, Wilson & Carston 2006, 2008) in a hybrid theory of metaphor. By providing sample analyses, my aim is to demonstrate, what possible solutions hybrid theory can provide for problems of conceptual metaphor theory and relevance theory, both serving as its sources. I further intend to point out some critical aspects in the background assumptions of the hybrid theory of Tendahl.
