Der deutsch-italienische Sprachkonflikt
Abstract:
The present paper focuses on the fault lines and tensions which define the conflicts between the Austrian-Germans and the Italians in the 19th century Habsburg state. The conflicts in Lombardy and Welsh Tyrol where Italians settled in monolingual regions as well as the tensions evolving from the mixed Italian-Slavic-German settlements in the Adriatic lands are investigated from a sociolinguistic perspective focusing on the conflicts’ political and ideological aspects of power and domination.
