Stefan Michael Newerkla:
Der ungarisch-slowakische Sprachkonflikt im Königreich Ungarn

Abstract:
This article pictures more than a thousand years of juxtaposition of Hungarian and Slovak in the Kingdom of Hungary. After an overall view of the main and current literature in chapter 2, the basically peaceful coexistence of these two languages throughout most of the centuries is shown in chapter 3. In the last chapter, number 4, the main reasons for the Hungarian-Slovak language conflict in the Habsburg monarchy are given and the formation and growth of this strained relationship between Slovak emancipation efforts and Magyar assimilation attempts from the 18th century onwards are described.
